Lea Salonga to Star as Bernarda Alba in Filipino Adaptation of Federico García Lorca’s Classic

October 1, 2026

The Tony Award-winning actress admits feeling both excited and terrified as she prepares to portray an authoritarian matriarch in Federico García Lorca’s classic, staged entirely in Filipino.

MANILA, Philippines — Lea Salonga is preparing to step into one of theatre’s most formidable maternal roles as she headlines Theatre Group Asia’s (TGA) upcoming production of Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba, opening February 2027 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater.

Following her portrayal of The Witch in TGA’s sold-out production of Into the Woods, the Tony Award-winning performer takes on Bernarda Alba, a domineering matriarch whose determination to protect her family ultimately threatens to destroy it.

But even for an internationally acclaimed performer with decades of experience on Broadway and beyond, this particular role comes with some apprehension.

“To be perfectly honest, I hadn’t encountered this play before, which may work in my favor as I have no preconceived notions or strong opinions,” Salonga shares in TGA’s official announcement.

Having read both Chay Yew’s English adaptation and Guelan Varela-Luarca’s Filipino translation, she describes the work as culturally relevant and timely, despite the apprehension she feels about undertaking it.

Exploring a Mother Who Rules Through Fear

Written by Spanish dramatist Federico García Lorca, The House of Bernarda Alba follows a newly widowed mother who imposes eight years of mourning and absolute obedience upon her five daughters.

Within the confines of their home, appearances, discipline, and tradition take precedence over personal freedom. But as the daughters struggle with their own desires, frustrations, and ambitions, the arrival of a potential suitor threatens to unravel the household’s carefully maintained order.

For Salonga, understanding Bernarda’s motivations will be central to portraying a woman whose parenting philosophy differs significantly from her own.

“Bernarda is a mother who rules the roost and raises her children not with love but fear,” she explains.

Salonga acknowledges that such parenting practices continue to exist for cultural or familial reasons. Rather than approaching Bernarda simply as an oppressive figure, she intends to investigate the experiences and motivations that shaped her character.

“Her rule is law for every person living under her roof, and that house is not a happy place. How does anyone reach that point?” she asks.

It is this psychological complexity that makes the role particularly intriguing: a mother who sees herself as her family’s protector, even as her uncompromising authority transforms their home into a prison.

A New Challenge: Performing Entirely in Filipino

Beyond the character’s emotional demands, Salonga faces another challenge: Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba will be performed entirely in Filipino.

The actress, whose career includes acclaimed performances in Miss Saigon, Les Misérables, Once on This Island, and Sondheim’s Old Friends, admits to approaching the linguistic demands with equal parts anticipation and nervousness.

Borrowing a line from Into the Woods, Salonga describes herself as “excited and scared.”

She has already enlisted the assistance of translator Guelan Varela-Luarca to navigate the Filipino script, particularly the nuances behind his word choices.

For Salonga, the translation is more than a linguistic exercise. She recognizes how the Filipino language adds further layers of subtext and meaning to Lorca’s original work.

Bringing Lorca’s Classic Closer to Filipino Audiences

Adapted by celebrated director-playwright Chay Yew and translated into Filipino by Guelan Varela-Luarca, Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba brings one of twentieth-century theatre’s most significant tragedies into a distinctly Filipino theatrical context.

Its exploration of parental authority, family reputation, repression, and the struggle for independence offers audiences an opportunity to examine familiar cultural and generational tensions through Lorca’s enduring work.

The production also marks another collaboration between Salonga and Theatre Group Asia, whose previous productions include Request sa Radyo, Into the Woods, A Chorus Line, and the recently concluded international premiere of The Notebook: The Musical.

With Salonga inhabiting a character whose authority is both absolute and destructive, Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba promises a different side of an actress audiences have long celebrated for her extraordinary voice and commanding stage presence.

Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba opens in February 2027 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater, Circuit Makati.
