Why Joseph The Dreamer Still Resonates With a New Generation of Theatergoers

October 21, 2026

With Jordan Andrews, Neo Rivera, and Nonie Buencamino leading the cast, Trumpets brings its beloved musical back to the Manila stage from November 6 to 22, 2026.

Some stories never lose their relevance, no matter how many times they are told. For Filipino theater audiences, Joseph The Dreamer is one of them.

Decades after it first captured the hearts of theatergoers, Trumpets' beloved musical is returning for a limited run from November 6 to 22, 2026, at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza in Makati.

This time, Jordan Andrews and Neo Rivera will alternate in the title role, with acclaimed veteran actor Nonie Buencamino joining the production as Jacob, Joseph's father.

But what makes Joseph The Dreamer a story worth revisiting after all these years?

Perhaps it is the familiarity of its struggles. At some point, everyone has experienced disappointment, betrayal, uncertainty, or the feeling that life has taken an unexpected turn. Joseph's journey speaks to those experiences, reminding audiences that even the most difficult circumstances can lead to something meaningful.

And with a new generation of performers taking on its iconic characters, the musical has another opportunity to connect with audiences discovering the story for the first time.

A Role Passed Down Through Generations

Few roles in Philippine musical theater carry quite the same history as Joseph. Over the years, the character has been portrayed by some of the country's most recognizable performers, including Audie Gemora, Gary Valenciano, Franco Laurel, Alvin dela Peña, and Sam Concepcion.

For the 2026 production, Jordan Andrews and Neo Rivera step into the role, each bringing his own theatrical experience and interpretation.

Andrews began his performing career as a child, appearing in Broadway and West End productions of Miss Saigon and The King & I. Philippine audiences have since seen him in Ang Huling El Bimbo, Tabing Ilog: The Musical, Rent, Shrek The Musical, and, most recently, A Chorus Line.

Rivera, meanwhile, has established himself as a versatile performer across theater, film, and the visual arts. His stage credits include Going Home To Christmas, The Quest For The Adarna, A Christmas Carol, and On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

Interestingly, both performers previously joined Joseph The Dreamer as Judah, one of Joseph's brothers, while also alternating in the title role.

Their return gives them the opportunity to revisit the character with a deeper understanding of his journey.

"Playing Joseph means being part of a story that might reach someone exactly when they need it," Andrews shares. "If I've done my job right, someone else goes home wearing their own coat of hope, integrity, and forgiveness."

Rivera, who progressed from understudy in 2020 to alternate Joseph in 2022, is equally conscious of the role's legacy. He hopes to bring his own understanding of Joseph to the stage.

Nonie Buencamino Takes on the Role of Jacob

Another exciting addition to the 2026 production is award-winning actor Nonie Buencamino, who will portray Jacob, the father whose favoritism toward Joseph sets much of the story in motion.

Buencamino's extensive career spans film, television, and theater, with memorable appearances in Heneral Luna, Goyo: The Boy General, and Jose Rizal. Onstage, he recently earned a Gawad Buhay award for portraying three different characters in Balete. He also played Don Quixote in Man From La Mancha.

His casting adds an interesting dimension to the production, particularly in exploring the relationship between Jacob and Joseph.

While Joseph's journey often takes center stage, Jacob's love for his son, and the consequences of expressing that affection unequally among his children, are equally important to the story.

With Buencamino taking on the role, audiences can look forward to seeing how this complicated father-son relationship unfolds.

A Story of Betrayal, Forgiveness, and Second Chances

At the center of Joseph The Dreamer is a young man whose life changes dramatically because of his brothers' jealousy. Joseph, the eleventh of Jacob's twelve sons, enjoys his father's special affection. But what begins as resentment among siblings eventually leads to betrayal when his brothers sell him into slavery.

The musical's themes of faith, hope, integrity, and forgiveness are central to its appeal, making it a story that can speak to audiences across different generations.

A Strong Ensemble of Familiar and Emerging Theater Talents

Joining Andrews, Rivera, and Buencamino is an ensemble featuring both returning performers and new additions.

Iya Villanueva and Naya Ambi will alternate as Asenath, the Egyptian princess who also serves as the musical's principal narrator.

Lorenz Martinez takes on the role of Pharaoh, while Omar Uddin portrays Potiphar. Dippy Arceo and Jannah Baniasa alternate as Mrs. Potiphar.

Rapah Manalo and Boo Gabunada join the production as Joseph's brothers Judah and Reuben, respectively.

Also portraying Joseph's brothers are Luis Marcelo, Renz Bernardo, Sam Panililio, Anton Posadas, Daniel Solis, Carlos Canlas, Gabo Tiongson, Antonio Valdez, and Matthew Barbers.

Liam Nery and Enzo Isaac will play Young Joseph/Manasseh.

Vocal powerhouse Julia Serad portrays Rachel, Joseph's mother, and will perform the moving ballad He Opens A Window.

Completing the cast are Justine Narciso, Kathleen Francisco, Gabby Concepcion, Jim Ferrer, and Coleen Paz.

The combination of seasoned actors and emerging performers reflects the production's continuing commitment to introducing the musical to new audiences.

Continuing a Philippine Theater Legacy

Joseph The Dreamer has enjoyed successful runs throughout the 1990s and 2000s before being reimagined for a new generation of theatergoers.

The reimagined production featured original direction by Paolo Valenciano, musical direction by Myke Salomon, and choreography by MJ Arda.

For the 2026 staging, theater veteran Bernice Aspillaga takes the helm as staging director, with Jim Ferrer serving as assistant director and dance captain. Jay Pangilinan joins as musical director.

For Trumpets Artistic Director Audie Gemora, who originally portrayed Joseph, the musical remains particularly meaningful.

"Of all the musicals I've done, there was only one show that changed my life – that is Joseph The Dreamer," Gemora shares.

He also believes the time is right for younger theatergoers to experience the production and discover its message for themselves.

Joseph The Dreamer runs from November 6 to 22, 2026, at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati.

Tickets are available through Ticket2Me.net and official showbuyers.
