Theatre Group Asia unveils eight acclaimed actresses joining the Tony Award winner in a gripping Filipino adaptation of Federico García Lorca's classic drama.

Nine women. One household. A battle between authority and freedom.

Theatre Group Asia (TGA) has officially unveiled the eight actresses joining Tony Award winner Lea Salonga in Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba, bringing together an impressive ensemble of Philippine theater and screen talents for one of the company's most anticipated productions of 2027.

Opening in February 2027 at the Power Mac Center Spotlight Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati, the production features Salonga as Bernarda Alba, a domineering matriarch whose uncompromising control over her household fuels a struggle between tradition, repression, and the desire for independence.

Adapted by Chay Yew from Federico García Lorca's celebrated play and translated into Filipino by Guelan Varela-Luarca, the production explores the contradictions of a household ruled by a powerful woman yet governed by deeply entrenched patriarchal expectations.

Joining Salonga are Sheila Francisco, Maita Ponce, Toni Go-Yadao, Maronne Cruz, Mikaela Regis, Gabby Padilla, Frances Makil-Ignacio, and Jam Binay.

Together, the nine actresses bring decades of collective experience across theater, film, and television to a story that remains strikingly relevant to contemporary Filipino audiences.

A Mother, Five Daughters, and a House Divided

At the center of the drama is Bernarda Alba, whose authority shapes the lives of everyone living under her roof.

Veteran actress Sheila Francisco portrays María Josefa, Bernarda's elderly mother, whose seemingly unfiltered observations expose truths that the other women struggle to express.

Francisco, whose credits include Bar Boys: A New Musical and Ang Huling El Bimbo, finds particular resonance in the play's depiction of Filipino family dynamics.

"She's the only one who can actually verbalize exactly what the other women are feeling," Francisco shares.

The actress also points to the familiarity of the powerful matriarch in Filipino households, making the play's themes especially recognizable to local audiences.

Bernarda's five daughters, meanwhile, represent different responses to the expectations and restrictions imposed upon them.

Maita Ponce takes on Angustias, the eldest daughter. Known for her work in Orosman at Zafira, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Si Faust! After Goethe, Ponce is interested in examining the complexities beneath Angustias's seemingly conventional characterization.

She also highlights one of the play's central contradictions: women can wield authority within their families while perpetuating patriarchal standards.

"What makes it scary is even if we're a matriarchal society, the standards women impose on one another are fundamentally patriarchal," Ponce explains.

Toni Go-Yadao, a senior member of Tanghalang Pilipino's Actors Company, portrays Magdalena, the second daughter. Her interpretation explores a woman attempting to support her sisters while finding her own place within a restrictive household.

Maronne Cruz plays Amelia, a reserved character who presents a departure from the stronger personalities she has frequently portrayed onstage.

With credits including Waitress, The Band's Visit, Hair, and Ang Huling El Bimbo, Cruz welcomes the opportunity to explore the quieter emotional dimensions of her character.

Mikaela Regis portrays Martirio, approaching the role with empathy rather than judgment. Having appeared in A Chorus Line, Mula sa Buwan, Delia D, and Bar Boys, Regis hopes to reveal the emotional struggles that inform Martirio's actions.

"I want to understand Martirio without judging her and portray her as a human being who is struggling, rather than simply as a villain," she shares.

Completing the five daughters is Gabby Padilla as Adela, the youngest, whose longing for freedom places her in direct conflict with Bernarda's authority.

Padilla, who won Best Actress at the 2024 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival for Kono Basho, brings her experience across independent cinema and theater to a character defined by resistance and determination.

Adela's refusal to accept the future prescribed for her becomes a crucial element in the household's escalating conflict.

The Women Who Know the Household's Secrets

Two additional characters provide an intimate perspective on the tensions unfolding within Bernarda's home.

Frances Makil-Ignacio portrays Poncia, Bernarda's longtime servant and confidante. Having previously appeared in another staging of Bernarda Alba, Makil-Ignacio brings familiarity with the material to a character who understands the household's complicated relationships.

She describes Poncia as "one of the most human" characters in the story, with relationships that reveal different dimensions of the family's conflicts.

Jam Binay, whose credits include Spring Awakening, Next to Normal, and Bar Boys: A New Musical, plays Blanca, the household's second servant.

For Binay, the play's examination of patriarchy remains especially relevant, even in a household where men are physically absent.

"Expectations can persist even in a household where men are absent," she observes.

Together, Poncia and Blanca offer perspectives on the family's internal struggles, revealing how social hierarchies and expectations shape the experiences of women both within and outside the immediate family.

A Classic Drama With a Distinctly Filipino Resonance

Although Federico García Lorca's original drama emerged from a different cultural and historical setting, its exploration of repression, family obligation, social expectations, and women's autonomy carries particular significance in the Philippine context.

The contradiction at the heart of Ang Tahanan ni Bernarda Alba is especially compelling: a household dominated by a woman who nevertheless enforces traditions that limit the freedom of other women.

Through its Filipino-language adaptation, the production invites audiences to reconsider familiar ideas about family authority, obedience, and the expectations passed from one generation to the next.

The casting also brings together established theater veterans and a younger generation of performers, creating opportunities for different interpretations of the women's relationships, conflicts, and individual struggles.
