Urinetown Returns to Ateneo This November 2026 After 11 Years

October 16, 2026

What happens when even a trip to the toilet becomes something people must fight for?

Ateneo Blue Repertory brings Urinetown: The Musical back to the Ateneo stage this November, 11 years after its previous staging at the university. The Tony Award-winning musical comedy will run on November 13–15 and November 20–22, 2026, at the Rizal Mini Theater, Ateneo de Manila University.

With a book and lyrics by Greg Kotis and music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann, Urinetown turns an unlikely premise into a satire about money, power, and access to basic necessities.

A city where everyone must pay to pee

Set in a city suffering from a 20-year drought, the musical imagines a world where private toilets have been banned. Residents must instead use public facilities controlled by a single company, which charges them for the privilege.

Among those living under the system is Bobby Strong, a young man who decides he has had enough and leads a rebellion.

The musical takes aim at corporate greed, government corruption, class inequality, and populist politics. It also pokes fun at musical theater’s familiar formulas, bringing humor to questions about who controls essential resources—and who pays the price.
