In recent years, Philippine theatre has become more than a destination for touring productions and international titles. It's also become a place where Filipino artists who have built careers abroad are choosing to create again. That growing exchange between local and global talent is quietly shaping the industry, and Theatre Group Asia's latest announcement is another sign of that momentum.

Filipino-American director Nicholas Polonio has been tapped to direct the international premiere of The Notebook The Musical, bringing years of experience from New York's theatre scene to one of the most anticipated productions of the year.

For many theatre fans in the Philippines, Polonio may not yet be a familiar name. But his body of work speaks to a career built alongside some of the most respected companies and artists in American theatre. Based in New York City, he has directed new plays and musicals while collaborating with organizations such as Ars Nova, New York Theatre Workshop, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, and Ma-Yi Theater Company. 

His work as an associate director has also placed him on acclaimed productions including the Tony Award-winning Slave Play, X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X, A Raisin in the Sun, and most recently, La Cage Aux Folles starring Billy Porter and Wayne Brady.

Rather than simply adding another New York credit to his résumé, Polonio's next project brings him back to Manila, where he'll lead Theatre Group Asia's production of The Notebook The Musical. 

It's a move that feels aligned with the company's vision of bringing together Filipino artists from across the world to create work for local audiences.

Led by Tony Award-winning designer Clint Ramos, Theatre Group Asia has consistently looked beyond borders when assembling its creative teams. Previous productions have brought together artists with careers spanning Manila, Broadway, London's West End, and beyond. Polonio's appointment continues that approach as part of a larger effort to connect Filipino talent across different stages and disciplines.

The production itself has steadily built excitement since its announcement. Based on Nicholas Sparks' bestselling novel and the beloved film adaptation, The Notebook The Musical features music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson and a book by Bekah Brunstetter, telling the enduring love story of Allie and Noah across different stages of their lives.

Leading the cast are Morissette as Middle Allie, Sheena Belarmino as Young Allie, and Philippine music icon Celeste Legaspi as Older Allie. Joining them are London-based Laurence Mossman as Middle Noah, Benedix Ramos as Young Noah, and acclaimed playwright and actor Rody Vera as Older Noah. 

The creative move of having Polonio on the team also highlights how much the conversation around Filipino theatre has evolved. More Filipino creatives are finding ways to move between international and Philippine productions, bringing home new perspectives while remaining connected to audiences here.

The Notebook The Musical runs from September 3 to 20, 2026 at the Samsung Performing Arts Theater in Makati.
