John Cena and Idris Elba

REVIEW: Why Prime Video's Heads of State  Is Your Next Must-Stream
By Jonathan Subido

Genre: Action Comedy

Director: Ilya Naishuller
Starring: John Cena, Idris Elba, Priyanka Chopra

Heads of State delivers hilarity and excitement—a feel-good action-adventure with a clever twist on the classic buddy cop formula.

Heads of State is an action-comedy that puts a clever twist on the classic buddy cop formula — this time, the unlikely partners happen to be the leaders of two global superpowers: the United States and the United Kingdom.

Directed by Ilya Naishuller, the film takes us on an adventure full of danger and conflict between the two, and the film delivers an interesting and quite memorable experience as you are thrust into the action with little time to get your bearings.

The film takes place in modern day, where the UK Prime Minister, played by Idris Elba  and the US President, played by John Cena.  Both alums of The Suicide Squad,  Elba and Cena bring an elevated chemistry this time as the reluctant partners were forced to rely on each other when they got caught up in a terrorist attack. Lost and on their own, they must learn to trust one another and save their respective countries.

What truly sets the film apart is the outstanding work of its cast. Both the leads and supporting actors deliver engaging performances, bringing depth and humor to the story, albeit having the usual action-comedy tropes. The constant friction between the President and the Prime Minister provides some of the film's most entertaining moments, while their gradual growth adds an unexpected layer of heart.

Director Ilya Naishuller keeps the pacing tight throughout, ensuring there was never a dull moment, as nothing felt slow.

The special effects were top-notch as a lot of the action set pieces can catch you by surprise and you cannot help but wonder how are they going to get away from danger.

A standout element is how the film handled the backstory, presented through clever montages and quirky transitions that are both visually engaging and lighthearted, you cannot stop yourself from chuckling.

The sound design and special effects have been impressive as you can feel the intensity with the chaos happening on screen.

That said, it is not without its flaws, as the villains felt very one-dimensional, with little time dedicated to fleshing them out, leaving their motivations feeling thin and underdeveloped.

Verdict:

Heads of State delivers hilarity and excitement—a feel-good action-adventure with a clever twist on the classic buddy cop formula.

If you want to have a good time with your buddies without getting bored, then I highly recommend this just for the ride.
