Calling Aspiring Musical Theatre Writers! Pat Valera Leads Musical Writing Workshop This February
February 2, 2026
LOCAL PARTS, an ideas exchange hub dedicated to knowledge-based creative conversations, kicks off 2026 with its first workshop of the year with STAGE SPEAK: Steps and Tips for Writing Musicals, led by acclaimed playwright Pat Valera.
Known for celebrated Filipino musicals such as Mula sa Buwan, Dekada ’70 The Musical, and most recently Bar Boys: The Musical, Valera brings his experience as a playwright, director, and dramaturg into a one-day intensive designed to help participants take their first steps toward writing an original musical.
STAGE SPEAK is a beginner-friendly workshop created for aspiring and early-stage playwrights seeking a clearer understanding of how to turn ideas into musical theater. It also welcomes theatre enthusiasts, creatives from other disciplines, and anyone curious about how story, character, and music intersect on stage.
Throughout the session, participants will explore the fundamentals of theatrical storytelling, character development, and musical structure. The workshop also tackles the practical side of writing—covering artist’s rights, professional pathways, and what it means to create work within today’s theater landscape.
Conducted in both English and Filipino, STAGE SPEAK offers an accessible and insightful entry point into musical theater writing.
