When Rock Meets the Classics: Areté’s “Si Faust” Brings Wolfgang’s Music to the Theatre Stage
October 29, 2025
After the haunting success of Quomodo Desolata Es? Isang Dalamhati, Areté returns this November with another bold theatrical experiment — Si Faust, a rock opera adaptation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s timeless tragedy Faust. Delving into the music of the OPM band, Wolfgang, Nelsito Gomez and Basti Artadi have collaborated to create Si Faust, a rock opera adaptation of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s Faust.
A Rock Opera Rooted in the Filipino Soul
Set in a Philippine province ravaged by a deadly plague, Si Faust reimagines Goethe’s exploration of ambition, faith, and damnation through the raw energy and lyrical poetry of Wolfgang’s music. The story follows a foreign preacher named Faust — disillusioned by suffering and his own spiritual decay — who strikes a desperate bargain with the Devil, Mephistopheles. Granted youth, power, and pleasure, Faust performs miracles that heal the sick and elevate him to local sainthood, only to be undone by his forbidden love for Marga, an innocent provincial girl.
Their romance, shadowed by temptation and tragedy, mirrors the very core of human struggle — between salvation and sin, idealism and desire, love and destruction.

Joseton Vergel de Dios as Faust
A Stellar Cast and Creative Vision
Leading the ensemble is Joseton Vergel de Dios as the tormented Faust, opposite Maita Ponce as the cunning and magnetic Mephistopheles. Sha-ira Opsimar plays Marga, bringing innocence and emotional gravitas to the role. Joining them are Joshua Cabiladas as Tiño and Matel Patayon as Martha, supported by a strong ensemble featuring MC Dela Cruz, Jam Binay, JV Fulgencio, Thor Ganchero, and Iya Villanueva.
Under the artistic vision of Gomez and Artadi, Si Faust aims to transcend the boundaries between theater and concert — an experience where literature, music, and myth collide. The production invites audiences to question what one would sacrifice for fulfillment in a world haunted by both divinity and despair.
