Chinoy Chismis Brings Fil-Chi Theatre Back with a Restobar Twist

September 22, 2025

Following its debut run last May at the DTI-PTTC ENSAYO Creative Hub as an office scandal story, Chinoy Chismis returns with Wah-kong Anak Na Ganyan!, an innovative live performance blending theatre, improv, and cultural satire.

Set in a fictional dating show hosted by a Chinese-Filipino mother, four hopeful “kaishao” boys compete for her daughter’s hand — all under the watchful eyes of meddling “Chismosang Aunties”. The story is a playful yet piercing look at how Chinoys navigate love, reputation, and family expectations in a world where every choice has a price.

From Corporate Affairs to Restobar Romance

The trilogy began with Corporate Affairs — a Fil‐Chi reimagining of August Strindberg’s Miss Julie set in the corporate world, where ambition, class, and scandal simmered behind office doors.

Wah-kong Anak Na Ganyan! builds on that energy, shifting from the privacy of workplace intrigue to the spectacle of a public contest, showing what happens when the stakes move from whispered negotiations to decisions made under the spotlight.

Meet the Cast

Isabelle Sophie Ng (FAMAS nominee: Her Locket) stars as Julie, a fiercely independent daughter determined to make her own life choices – even if it means clashing with her mother, Auntie Patty, played by Fil‐Chi comedian and content creator Ansis Sy. Completing the central trio is Jin Mikado as John, a restaurant waiter caught in the crossfire of family expectations.

The Kaishao Boys — Chino Liao, Jacqpat, and Dav Dionisio — bring a wild mix of Chinoy bachelor profiles, with Rensi Pua (Auntie Letty) and Nina Lim (Auntie Lin) as the loyal kumares, each backing their favorite suitor. All of the cast members are part of the Third World Improv community.

Behind the Scenes

Directed by Geráld‐Kristóf Diola (BA Theatre Arts, UP Diliman) as his undergraduate thesis and produced under UP Dulaang Laboratoryo, Chinoy Chismis is a series of three Chinese-Filipino reimaginings of August Strindberg’s Miss Julie.

Advised by Mr. Jonas Gabriel M. Garcia and Asst. Prof. Robert Arlo De Guzman for this project, Diola aims to explore the cultural dynamics between “Pinoys” and “Chinoys” through performance, satire, and collaboration.

The artistic team for Wah-kong Anak Na Ganyan! includes Fil‐Chi creatives Nathania Kuy, Francel Go, Jiezl Virmy Chua, and Anna C. Gamboa; improv consultants Sabrina Manansala and Charles Josh (Same Bananas Improv); and upcoming theatre professionals Elijah Llevares and Patricia Suyat spearheading the social media
campaign.

An Immersive Restobar Experience

With the stage set inside a working restaurant, audiences are part of the energy — eating, reacting, and even becoming part of the banter. Every ticket comes with one (1) free meal, with choices including Boneless Chicken Thigh Fried Chicken, Buffalo Tenders, Beef Caldereta, Pork Belly, or Spring Rolls (Cheesy Pork, Beef, and Mushroom variants available).

The show runs for two nights only — September 26 (Friday) and September 27 (Saturday) — at the Don Conejos Restorante, Greenhills Town Center

Doors open at 7:00 PM, with the show starting at 8:30 PM.
